The Oombi Track is legendary in 4WD circles, known for its extremely challenging conditions and epic scenery.
This is a life-changing journey, from which you’ll make life-long connections.
Over the tour you will traverse the 400-kilometre track, leaving behind the Gibb River Road near Home Valley Station and emerging again at Kalumburu.
As you travel through this ancient land you’ll follow in the footsteps of our ancestors who have inhabited the remote Kimberley for many thousands of years. You’ll be immersed in culture, awestruck by the pristine beauty of the natural environment and exposed to the indigenous and pioneering stories of all those who have passed this way before you.
Every day you will move forward on your journey and this will involve some very serious 4WDing over what Ronnie fondly describes as a ‘goat track’. Each day may involve up to 5 hours of driving, with opportunities for fishing, photography, relaxing and much more along the way.
“Perhaps this was the highlight of the trip – our engagement with indigenous issues and indigenous people. It is confronting at times – we visited the sites of at least two massacres; plus the closed community of Oombulgurri, subject of a recent ABC 4 Corners report. This town was closed due to accusations of endemic family violence and sexual abuse. Colin was brought up here and he had a different perspective of the closure. Our views of black/white history and the content of history books and lessons were challenged and some of our notions turned upside down.” – Mike Ralston, 2021
