A tasting plate of the bigger and more challenging Oombi trip, the 6-day Balanggarra self-catered tag-along tour departs from the King Edward River campsite at the top end of the Gibb River Road.
You will have likely endured the rigours of the Mitchell Falls road which has notorious corrugations. Once you meet up with Colin or Ronnie and head up the Kalumburu Road, you realise that you’ve departed the well-worn tourist tracks and entered ancient country that is yours to absorb. This trip is suitable for well-prepared four wheel drives (with low range) and sturdy off-road camper trailers with high clearance.
A highlight is the crossing of the Drysdale River. Daunting, yes! But watch and learn from your capable guide and be ready for the deep hole about two thirds of the way across. Trust your rig and and progress slowly but steadily across this epic watercourse. There are other crossings but by then, you’ll take them in your stride having refined your skills and increased your confidence. This is a trip where driving can be shared by couples. It’s not easy, but it’s forgiving and a great way to hone your skills in preparation for the delights of the Oombi Track.
This tour is punctuated with a visit to King George Falls. Prior to 2021, it was not possible to drive to King George Falls so unless you were lucky enough to visit by boat or helicopter, the most remote and amazing 80m high cascade was off limits. Ronnie cut the track in from Jockey Wheel Creek after the wet season in 2021 so jump at the opportunity to be one of the very few who get to visit this most pristine and private paradise.
